How to complete a successful career switch by government employees!
Completing a positive career switch from a government position can be more fun and easier than you think. But it certainly doesn’t feel that way. The shock of suddenly being rejected from your comfortable and supposed secure government career must be devastating. Then figuring out what to do next becomes more confusing and frustrating.
Positive steps to complete a desirable career switch
- Relax. Stop blaming yourself for this predicament. You did nothing wrong. Your rejection was out of your control. Welcome to the human race! We in the public sector have faced being fired more often than recognized. I was fired from my dream job after only 5 years because I performed it too well. I made my owner filthy rich in a short period of time and he could not handle it. His deep insecurities and drug use threatened his egos because he could not publicly show that he generated the profits. So, he arrogantly disposed of me to prove that he could get the acclaim for the company profits without me. Many of us survived and thrived because we were fired. You can too.
- Connect with people you love and respect you. Reengage with family and friends who support you for being you. Spend more time with your children and especially your grandchildren. Enjoy the feelings of being accepted and encouraged by those who care for you. You deserve it.
- Participate in activities you enjoy. Take that trip you wanted, jump into your favorite hobbies. Go fishing; play more tennis or golf, or remodel rooms in your house. Enjoy being human away from work.
- Get help to feel acceptance of your situation. Join or even start a support group of other laid off employees to share your feelings and recognize you are not alone, and you are OK. It is good to vent your negative feelings of being dismissed. And hear others do the same. Purge your need to look at the past to open the doors to the future. Using a therapist to rid yourself of the negative feelings of the past can also help.
- Get help to refocus on switching to the best career for you. Connect with friends, family or others in your support group to help you go forward into your next life. Also consider engaging professional help from the right support people. You may consider engaging a career coach, career counselor, career advisor or connect with career headhunters and recruiters.

My goal was to find a career that I can be passionate about and not feel like I am going to a “job” every day.
After my coach sessions with my TCC coach, I was able to find my true calling and feel confident about my decision. Additionally, I also improved other aspects of my life, such as my personal relationships, health habits and time management skills, as they hold as much weight in my life (if not more) as my career.
